Neurotoxin” may sound like a strange word; however, at White Onyx Medical Weight Loss & Aesthetics, it simply refers to a treatment to relax the muscles responsible for expression lines like crow’s feet and frown lines. You likely know this type of treatment by the brand name “Botox®,” though there are alternative products that work in much the same way. As you search for a “clinic near me in Fitchburg, Massachusetts,” our team in Gardner welcomes the opportunity to share five steps to expect in your journey to smoother, more youthful skin with this injectable procedure.

1 – Book a complimentary consultation.

During your visit, be prepared to share your concerns and goals with us. We’ll also take a closer look at those concerns and evaluate your facial anatomy, skin type and condition, and muscle movement. With this information in hand, we can recommend the most appropriate treatment, as many cosmetic procedures are available at our office. Some of these procedures may even be combined to get the best results. This approach may include another type of injectable, dermal filler. When combined, neurotoxins and fillers are sometimes referred to as a “liquid facelift” – supporting dramatic results without the risk and downtime.

2 – Prepare for your appointment.

Many common blood thinners, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can increase your risk of bruising and swelling at the sites of your injections. For this reason, we may ask that you avoid taking these medications and certain supplements (such as fish oil) that carry similar risks. Of course, we take into account your medical history and overall health when discontinuing or adjusting any medications.

3 – Enjoy a quick and gentle treatment.

First, the areas to be injected are cleansed. Then, we mark those areas while asking you to make specific facial expressions. For instance, when we ask you to squint, the specific facial muscles associated with crow’s feet around the eyes are isolated. While numbing is not needed for comfort, anesthetic cream or cooling is available. Many of our clients describe the injections as a quick pinch, like a tiny mosquito bite. After the right amount of neurotoxin has been injected into the right muscles, we ensure the product is properly distributed. Cooling may be applied to help with immediate swelling or tenderness.

4 – Follow post-treatment instructions.

One of the biggest risks following treatment is migration of the product from the injection site to other parts of the face. This can be avoided by simply leaving the injection sites alone. Resist the urge to rub or massage these areas. You should also avoid any heavy activities that could cause the product to spread to other areas. Strenuous exercise and exposure to excessive heat may also increase your risk of swelling and bruising.

5 – Maintain your results.

In the days following treatment, your lines will gradually appear less and less noticeable. People metabolize neurotoxins in different ways. Also, results last longer in areas with less muscle activity. So, there are numerous factors that can impact when you will need additional injections. As you start to notice the effects wearing off, contact us. For most people, maintenance treatments are scheduled three or four times a year.
